I’ve been a singer-songwriter all my life. My mom, with her degree in piano performance, started me up training classically piano at 7 years old, and didn’t let up for 10 years. That was the moment I found my calling in life — not to play Chopin or Debussy, much as I love all that music, but anything else! I came to see, if I know the song, I can play it and sing it.
I devoured the catalogues of classic pop pianists — Billy Joel, Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins — as well as other great artists, such as Eric Clapton, Sting, Van Halen. I began writing and came to see that’s where I love writing the most (that and Broadway music, of which I’ve also written scores over the years, including a full-scale musical, “A Senior Moment” all about dementia and living in memory care (Hoping to find the producer who will put it on the screen one day!)).
Despite doing the very safe move of going to grad school at the University of Utah (Go Utes!!) and getting an MS degree in Speech-Language Pathology, I never lost the drive to become a professional musician. Now, after 15 years of practicing as a clinician, I’m back on the road to achieving my greatest goals in life, to become a career musician, to entertain audiences with my music my lyrics my humor and everything in-between, and possibly to branch out further beyond Broadway and follow the footsteps of other great heroes such as John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, scoring music for film the way I’ve seen them do all my life.
I think of 43 as a wild age to be embarking on these unknown waters, but a fun one! And I know for a fact I’d die unfulfilled and regretful, if I never jumped into the cannon’s mouth and shot myself and my art into the world, to see what we can do together. Hope you enjoy the tunes, the reels, the shows, and the laughs!
My latest project as a solo artist is doing my first solo rock opera — very exciting! It’s xentitled Joe Marshall and the Multiverse of Second Chances! The show contains a basic story of exactly that, specifically in the context of relationships and human connection and the funny mucky mess it can all get us into, and get us out of as well.
Intertwined with my show are a series of pop hits, newly beloved and classics, from artists such as Billy Joel, Elton John, Marc Cohn, Sting, Phil Collins, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, depending on what the night’s feeling like. I make a point to let audiences in and get to know me personally because, if I’m not sharing myself with my art then for me there’s no point in any of it.
